Artificial intelligence (AI) is gradually becoming the next major change force in the printing industry, and its applications have begun to penetrate various fields. According to the research report "Artificial Intelligence in the Printing Industry: The Journey Begins", jointly released by PRINTING United Alliance and NAPCO Research, printing suppliers are in the early stages of leveraging artificial intelligence in production, sales, marketing and management.
The study is an ongoing project to track industry adoption of artificial intelligence. Data shows that more and more printing companies are beginning to integrate AI into operations. Through a comparison of two independent surveys conducted at different periods (see Figure 1), the report noted that enterprises using AI increased from 24.7% in September 2023 to 40.0% in March 2024.
The study combines quantitative and qualitative data to deeply analyze the current application status, main functions, implementation strategies, advantages and impact on the future development of the printing industry. The report mentioned that printing companies are the first to introduce AI in the fields of content creation and marketing, which are relatively easy to get started, helping companies accumulate experience before further integrating AI into more complex business processes.
The printing suppliers interviewed reported the following typical cases of AI applications:
A graphics and logo production company with annual sales of $20 million to $40 million uses AI to optimize material reception processes, improve inventory management, aid business decisions, and use AI tools during the conceptual stage.
A commercial printing company of the same size uses ChatGPT to generate and market promotion, such as writing potential customer marketing emails, and also adopting AI in the estimation and implementation of new ERP systems.
A packaging and printing company with annual sales of $100 million to $150 million applies AI to production processes such as file preparation, machine setting and color management.
Another commercial printing company with annual sales of $200 million to $250 million uses AI to automate customer expansion, ensure consistency in communication, optimize job schedules, and screen recruitment applicants.
These businesses are exploring multiple AI integration strategies, from forming internal implementation teams to hiring external consultants to providing AI education and training to team members. Almost all companies surveyed believe it is crucial to educate employees to recognize that AI is to enhance their work ability rather than replace jobs.
Overall, AI is gradually integrating into multiple areas of the printing industry, and the widespread use of enterprises demonstrates its potential disruptive power. With the continuous exploration and development of the industry, AI's influence in the printing industry is expected to continue to expand.
